What does surfactant do?

Surfactant is used as a wetting agent/spreader. It breaks down the waxy cuticle on plants and helps the herbicide stick for better absorption.

What is the active ingredient?

Alligare 90 is a nonionic surfactant.

What is a nonionic surfactant?

Nonionic surfactants are the most commonly used type of surfactant. They work with most registered pesticides and help with spray droplet retention, spreading, and penetration of leaf surfaces.

How do you apply surfactant?

Mix the surfactant with water and the desired herbicide then spray directly on the weeds.

How does this compare to other surfactants?

There are many types of surfactants for herbicides. A nonionic surfactant works well with Imox, Flumigard, or Semera.

Is is safe for fish and wildlife?

Alligare 90 surfactant is an aquatic surfactant and is safe to use with the fish, frogs, turtles, etc. in the water as well as the animals that come visit.

Will surfactants kill plants?

No, surfactants do not kill plants. The herbicides they are mixed with do.

When should I apply a surfactant?

Imox herbicide paired with a surfactant can be used for emergent weeds and is most effective late in the season. Flumigard or Semera paired with a surfactant can be used for floating weeds when the water temperature is 60° F or warmer and the weeds are actively growing.

When will I see results after applying?

Results depend on the herbicide that the surfactant is mixed with.

How to apply

• If using with Imox, dilute products with tap water and evenly spray the exposed parts of the plants entirely
  • Dilute 2 oz. surfactant and 2 oz. of Imox in 1 gallon of water
• If using with Semera or Flumigard, dilute products with tap water and evenly spray over the surface of the plants
  • Dilute 1 oz. Semera or Flumigard and 1 oz. surfactant in 1 gallon of water

When to apply

• Apply on a calm, sunny day
• Treat when plants are established and actively growing
• With Imox or other systemic herbicides, treat in late summer to early fall to get better kill of the root systems. At this time, plants are pulling energy into their roots to store for the winter.
• With Semera or Flumigard, treat early morning

Other tips

• For Imox or other systemic herbicides, treatment is most effective when the plants are mature or close to full grown. This allows for more plant surface to spray enough mixture on.
  • Extremely cold or cloudy weather following treatment may result in a delay of the visible effects
