Product Info

We recommend using both Imox and a surfactant to effectively control and kill cattails, water lilies, grasses, weeds, poison ivy, woody brush, and more in open areas of ponds and lakes. These systemic cattail and water lily weed killer herbicide products kill both the plant and root; they are excellent for beach areas above the water line. A surfactant is used to facilitate spreading and penetration of waxy cattail cuticles, it breaks down the waxy cuticle. This product, a water-soluble liquid, mixes readily with water and a nonionic surfactant to be applied as a foliar spray for the control or destruction of many herbaceous and woody plants. This product moves through the plant from the point of foliage contact to and into the root system. Imox is a systemic cattail and water lily weed killer herbicide.

Benefits:

  • Imox is EPA approved
  • Safe for most fish and wildlife
  • No swimming or fishing restrictions
  • Results in just 4-5 weeks
  • Lake Restoration Product Guarantee for EPA approved products

FAQ

What are these products used for?

Imox is a broad spectrum herbicide for treating emergent vegetation. Surfactant is a wetting agent that breaks down the waxy cuticle to help the herbicide stick and be absorbed. Together, this cattail killer for ponds and lily pad weed killer are the best herbicide for water lilies and any plants that emerge from the water’s surface.

What is the active ingredient?

The active ingredient in Imox is ammonium salt of imazamox.

How to apply Imox and surfactant?

Mix Imox with a surfactant and water in a sprayer, then spray the plants directly from the tops all the way to where they touch the water.

Do I really need a surfactant for this cattail spray?

Yes, surfactant breaks down the waxy cuticle on the plants and helps the Imox stick.

How does Imox compare to Glyphosate?

Imox and glyphosate are both broad spectrum herbicides safe for aquatic use. They contain different active ingredients.

Is this cattail herbicide and lily pad herbicide safe for fish and wildlife?

Imox is EPA approved for aquatic use. It is safe to use with the fish, frogs, turtles, etc. in the water as well as the animals that come visit.

Will Imox kill the roots?

Yes! Imox is systemic: it is absorbed through the leaves and stems where it is sprayed then moves through the plant down to the root system to kill both the plant and the roots.

When should I apply Imox and surfactant?

The ideal time to apply Imox with surfactant is late summer to early fall. This way, the plants are mature so there is plenty of space to get the product onto. The plants are getting ready to pull their energies down to the root system which helps pull the herbicide into the roots as well.

When will I see results after applying cattail killer?

You may start to see some damage in as little as 2 weeks, but you’ll see full results in 4-5 weeks. Cattails may be cut or pulled when they are brown and crispy. Do not pull water lilies.

Can I use these products to kill more than just cattails and water lilies?

Yes! Imox will kill a wide variety of weeds. If you’re looking for a specific plant, check the Imox herbicide label.

Treatment Tips

Read all labels for complete instructions before applying products.

Weed identification

Our recommendations:

Emergent weed control

How to apply

  • Dilute Imox and a surfactant with tap water and spray the exposed parts of the plant entirely
    • Dilute 2 oz. Imox and 2 oz. of surfactant in 1 gallon of water

When to apply

  • Apply in late summer to early fall to get better kill of the root systems. At this time, plants are pulling energy into their roots to store for the winter.
  • Treat when plants are established and actively growing
  • May re-treat 14 days after first application

Other tips

  • Treatment is most effective when the plants are mature or close to full grown. This allows for more plant surface to spray enough mixture on.
  • Extremely cold or cloudy weather following treatment may result in a delay of the visible effects

It definitely does help, but I’ve had to do many applications, each time using a much stronger solution than what is called for. Even still, some cattails come out a little easier and others are a beast to remove. I will order another whole batch of each of the 2 products to try to eradicate these horrible weeds. We do have a large quantity of them in our pond, so hopefully after many hours and a lot of effort we can keep these at bay in the future.

  2. dawnthomas100 (verified owner)

First application didn’t do much and after a few weeks I applied again using more product. It seems to be working on my pesky phragmites

  3. Steve Davidson (verified owner)

Bought a lakefront property a few years ago that the lily pads had taken over. Found this product online from Lake Restoration and started using it. I now have cleared 80% of the area with little to no return of the lilies. I have recommended this product to others on the lake and will continue to use it to keep on lake front clear.

  4. Russ Smolke (verified owner)

The product worked as instructed and the lake is looking good

  5. Tom Frisk (verified owner)

Minimal results on horsetail after applying three times so far – I wish there was a different product to use to get rid of the horsetail. I have some cattails and they also show little results to the application. I have purchased other products from Lake restoration with fantastic results but this product is a dud for me.

    • Paul Kretsch

      Tom,
Horsetail is a tough reed to control with herbicides(read here). However, this is your best product option for treating.
Cattails are listed on the Imox Label as “easy to control from foliar applications”.
Because you only received the Imox and surfactant 20 days ago, it simply has not been enough time to see the results yet. You should start to see the full results on your cattail treatments in 4-5 weeks from when you treated them. Hopefully you see results on the horsetail at this time too! Do let us know with an update in a couple more weeks.

  6. Marty Christa (verified owner)

Mixed it a little richer than it called for, and at the week three mark, everything that I sprayed was yellow or dead. Can pull cattails out effortlessly now the the roots are dead.

  7. Troy Robinson

I used this on something that did not seem to be a cattail but Emma said it was in the “family”. It worked within about 3 days and I got a total kill.

  8. Susan Summer

Works great on cattails. We don’t have lily pads . I had used another product first on the tails which did not work. I had quick results and the cattails haven’t grown back. Good stuff!

  9. bob

    works very well killing fragmites

    so good

  13. Anonymous (verified owner)

I cannot believe you are trying to kill lily pads and cattails which are native plants! These are good. I would like to know about getting rid of the phragmites that are an invasive species. Please don’t kill our wonderful native plants by poisoning our Michigan wetlands and waterways!

I made up 4 gallons and sprayed an area closest to my dock, 5 days later and most the lily pads are turning yellow and brown and clearly are dying! I will be doing more applications further down the shore as they die

  15. Michael (verified owner)

So far so good. Did one application using a 2oz/2oz/gallon mix. After one week, water lillies closest to shore(where I sprayed) are beginning to wilt/yellow/brown. Plan to do a second application and work my way towards center of pond. Will continue to update and will post pictures if I can figure out how. UPDATE: 10 days since first application and lillies that were browning and wilting have began to sink. Made a second application today.

  16. Bernadette (verified owner)

Works great on Lilly’s. I used one bottle herbicide to one bottle surfactant in a gallon sprayer & mixed. (Yes I used much more for a 40”x40” space) After 6 days the Lily’s had turned black and sunk! Simply go in with a rake or hoe and pull out the dead root. Thank you!

  17. Anonymous (verified owner)

Mixed and sprayed as directed. Killed 7 of my 11 albino catfish. Waiting to see if it kills cattails and waterlilies.

  18. Fabio (verified owner)

Our local pond’s surface had a heavy covering of cattail and lily pads, covering almost 50% of the lake. Made a few applications and results were visible within a few days. They were browning and wilting out. The surfactant even helped spread into other parts that had excessive coverage too.

  19. Keith (verified owner)

A wonderful product! Sprayed on Hydrilla in our pond a couple years ago. Pond was covered in it. It killed all of it! We were thrilled! Are used to get in the pond and pull it out by hand. What a great product!

I purchased the 1 quart of Glyphosate and 1 quart of Alligare 90 for a 1/4 acre (10,000 surface area) mat of Cuban Bulrush on my central Florida based pond. The bulrush had an extensive intertwined root structure that ran from 12 to 18 inches below the waterline. I applied the products with a regular sprayer using all the chemical in a 2% solution spread as evenly as possible. I noticed the bulrush turning brown in about a week and in three weeks I believe it was dead and a week after that we were able to break it up and pull it out of the pond. To bad I can’t post pictures because it is quite a big pile. Overall, the Glyphosate (as mixed with the surfactant) worked as described and I am glad to have my pond cleared of that horrible invasive weed.

I used this product on reeds last year. I was disappointed last year. This year, I hardly have any reeds compared to other areas I did not spray. I suspect that is why I have little to none this year. I do have some little sprouts that I just pull, but not the hundreds of last year.

  24. Susan (verified owner)

Got this product a month ago and have sprayed the pond twice now, second time made a stronger mixture, nothing, no dead or dying lilies or cattails. Very disappointing.

  26. Kelly (verified owner)

I bought it for cat tails which it is working. I have to get the right combination still. It requires more than it suggests. Unless mine are just stubborn. The best part is it works EXCELLENT on Night Shade. That weed is so hard to kill. It killed them to the point that some of the plants within 7 days you could kick and they would crumble. Love it!! Just bought 4 more quarts to treat an entire ranch.

  27. Timothy (verified owner)

I was shocked on how well this product worked! We had so many Cattails we couldn’t see the pond! Now we have none and the view is terrific !!!

  28. Anonymous (verified owner)

I was skeptical when I purchased this as I’ve tried all kind of stuff on my lake Lilly pads and cat tail. This product is amazing, it says to use one ounce of each per one gallon of water, I doubled it and it killed them all. The best product by far I have ever used. I will continue to use this.

  29. Anonymous (verified owner)

I tied this product for water lily control and it didn’t work. I saw no difference. This year I will try to mix two parts of the Glyphosate to 1 part surfactant.

  30. Pat (verified owner)

Not only will this kill Cattails it will kill any other pesky weeds you got in the yard! I just mixed one cup to 3 gallons of water every plant it touched!

  31. Anonymous (verified owner)

this product worked wonders on my cattail problem i told all my friends about your product keep up the good work !

  32. Mark (verified owner)

The very BEST stuff I have ever used to kill all vegetation around the edges of my 4 acre lake. It only took a quart to cover 2-3 foot all around the pond. It does take about 2 weeks for every thing to be dead including the root system.

  33. Anonymous (verified owner)

Excellent result on weeds and lily pad around around 4 acre lake.1 quart made 30 gallons, yet I bought 2 qt.s so now I have plenty for spots I missed. I had a disaster lake and now it looks great !
